How to live?¶
The term Purushottam is a Sanskrit compound word derived from Purusha (person, spirit, or soul) and Uttama (supreme or highest), which together mean “the Supreme Being” or “the Supreme Person.” In Hinduism, Purushottam is one of the many titles used to refer to the ultimate, divine reality — often associated with Lord Vishnu, and particularly Lord Rama and Lord Krishna as his incarnations.
Live like God who has all benefits
Why to Live?¶
But Purushottam goes deeper. The Gita says:
life is not merely about surviving or enjoying the world. It’s a sacred opportunity — a chance to remember who we really are.
Here, Krishna reveals the why — to realize our eternal nature, to rise beyond the cycles of birth and death, and to unite with the Supreme Consciousness. Life is not random. It's a journey back to the source — the Purushottam within.
So ultimately:
How to live? – With awareness, duty, love, and wisdom as dharma, artha, kama Why to live? – To evolve spiritually, realize the Self, and return to our Divine origin as moksha
Why These Four? The Deep Meaning of Artha, Kama, Dharma & Moksha¶
The Purusharthas (पुरुषार्थ) are the four foundational goals of human life in Vedic philosophy. They answer the "Why?" "How?" and "Who?" of existence.
1. The Origin: Who Defined These Four?¶
- Source: Ancient Vedas, Upanishads, Mahabharata (Bhagavad Gita), Manu Smriti.
- Rishis (Sages): Vyasa, Manu, Chanakya, and later acharyas like Shankaracharya and Ramanuja.
- Purpose: To guide humans toward a balanced, meaningful life—both materially and spiritually.
2. Why Only These Four?¶
These four cover all human motivations:
Purushartha | Meaning | Why Needed? | Danger if Ignored |
---|---|---|---|
Artha (अर्थ) | Wealth, security | Survival, comfort | Poverty, dependence |
Kama (काम) | Desire, pleasure | Joy, relationships | Frustration, emptiness |
Dharma (धर्म) | Duty, ethics | Order, justice | Chaos, guilt |
Moksha (मोक्ष) | Liberation | Freedom from rebirth | Eternal suffering in cycle of birth/death |
Without all four, life is incomplete.
- Example: A rich man (Artha) without Dharma becomes corrupt.
- A monk (Moksha seeker) ignoring Artha may depend on others.
3. How Are They Related?¶
(A) The Hierarchy (From Basic to Ultimate)¶
- Artha → Kama (First, secure survival, then enjoy).
- Dharma → Moksha (First, live righteously, then seek liberation).
(B) The Conflict & Balance¶
- Kama vs Dharma: Lust (kama) can break ethics (dharma).
- Solution: Follow dharma first (e.g., marriage before intimacy).
- Artha vs Moksha: Greed (artha) blocks spiritual growth (moksha).
- Solution: Use wealth for charity (Gita 17.20).
(C) The Integration (Ideal Life)¶
- Chanakya Neeti = Artha + Dharma (Wealth with ethics).
- Bhagavad Gita = Dharma + Moksha (Duty with surrender to God).
4. When to Focus on Which?¶
Stage of Life (Ashrama) | Primary Goal |
---|---|
Brahmacharya (Student) | Learn Dharma + Artha (skills) |
Grihastha (Householder) | Artha + Kama (wealth, family) |
Vanaprastha (Retirement) | Dharma + Moksha (service, wisdom) |
Sannyasa (Renunciation) | Moksha (full-time spirituality) |
Exception: Bhakti yogis (like ISKCON devotees) can pursue Moksha in any stage through Krishna consciousness.
5. Who Should Follow Them?¶
- Every human (not just Hindus).
- Businessmen: Artha + Dharma (Chanakya Neeti).
- Lovers: Kama → Divine love (Bhagavatam’s Radha-Krishna).
- Leaders: Dharma (justice) + Moksha (selflessness).
- Seekers: Skip Artha/Kama, go straight to Moksha (Gita 6.3).
6. Scientific & Psychological Validation¶
- Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs matches Purusharthas:
- Artha = Physiological/Safety needs (food, money).
- Kama = Social/Love needs (relationships).
- Dharma = Esteem/Ethics (self-respect).
- Moksha = Self-actualization (transcendence).
Final Wisdom (Bhagavad Gita 3.21)¶
"Whatever a great man does, others follow. His standards become the world’s."
- Balance all four to live fully.
- Prioritize Dharma & Moksha for lasting peace.

The Raw, Unfiltered Truth About Artha, Kama, Dharma & Moksha¶
1. Artha (Wealth) – The Brutal Reality¶
Why? Because money buys survival—food, shelter, power.
How? Chanakya Neeti teaches ruthless pragmatism:
- "Even a snake without poison should pretend to be deadly." (Fake it till you make it.)
- "Save money like your life depends on it—because it does."
When? Now. The world respects wealth, not wisdom.
Who? You. If you’re poor, society will crush you.
Dark Side: Obsession with Artha turns you into a greedy ghost—always hungry, never satisfied.
2. Kama (Desire) – The Forbidden Truth¶
Why? Because pleasure is human. Sex, love, art—deny it, and you’re lying to yourself.
How? Kama Sutra isn’t just about sex—it’s about mastering desire so it doesn’t master you.
- "Enjoy, but don’t become an addict."
When? Youth. Old age comes fast—don’t waste your prime.
Who? Householders. Monks suppress it; fools drown in it.
Dark Side: Kama without Dharma = a life of regret. (Ask the cheating spouse, the porn addict, the lonely billionaire.)
3. Dharma (Duty) – The Uncomfortable Burden¶
Why? Because chaos wins if you don’t fight.
How? Bhagavad Gita says:
- "Do your damn duty, even if the world burns." (Gita 2.47)
When? Always. No retirement from righteousness.
Who? Everyone. But cowards call it "too hard."
Dark Side: Dharma without Moksha = a robot following rules—no joy, just duty.
4. Moksha (Liberation) – The Ultimate Rebellion¶
Why? Because you’re going to die. And rebirth? More suffering.
How? Bhagavad Gita’s nuclear option:
- "Give up EVERYTHING for Krishna." (Gita 18.66)
When? Now. Tomorrow might never come.
Who? The brave. Weaklings cling to Artha/Kama.
Dark Side: Fake Moksha seekers escape life instead of transcending it.
The Harsh Truths No One Wants to Hear¶
- Artha without Dharma = Corruption. (Politicians, greedy CEOs.)
- Kama without Dharma = Ruin. (Broken families, STDs, addiction.)
- Dharma without Moksha = Empty Rituals. (Religious hypocrites.)
- Moksha without Balance = Cowardice. ("I’m spiritual" but can’t pay bills.)
Who’s Lying to You?¶
- Materialists: "Just chase money & sex!" → You’ll die unfulfilled.
- Religious Fanatics: "Give up everything!" → But they still eat food.
- Gurus Selling Peace: "Meditate & be happy!" → While driving a Mercedes.
The Only Real Solution¶
- Get Rich (Artha)—but don’t sell your soul.
- Enjoy Life (Kama)—but don’t become a slave.
- Do Right (Dharma)—but don’t be a judgmental fool.
- Break Free (Moksha)—because this world is a trap.
Final Challenge¶
- If you ignore Artha, you’ll be a beggar.
- If you ignore Kama, you’ll be repressed.
- If you ignore Dharma, you’ll be a monster.
- If you ignore Moksha, you’ll reincarnate and suffer again.
